Inhalation therapy – what you need to know.
Steam inhalation: Inhalation therapy without a device – is that possible?
You take a bowl with hot water, put a towel over your head and breathe in the steam. Something that has been going for so long must be good, mustn’t it? Unfortunately, that does not hold true in this case. While the warm water may make you feel better, there is no sustainable and proven positive effect. A Cochrane Review – a systematic overview that summarises research results – concluded in that inhalation therapy with warm steam has no effect on a cold1. Another study even warns against it, because of the risk of scalding in babies and children2,3.
How about adding other ingredients to hot water? Sometimes we are also advised to inhale a salt solution over a cooking pot. But because of the high boiling temperature of the salt compared to the water, that does not work at all. The water evaporates and the salt stays behind in the pot. Inhaling salt over a cooking pot is a remedy that is just a myth. Caution is advised for essential oils, as not everyone tolerates them well. There is also the risk of scalding yourself.
Products that can be used for inhalation
Which product should I use for inhalation? It depends on the salt content
The different saline solutions from PARI have different salt levels. Would you like to protect yourself from a cold or do you already have a cold? Then you should choose the PARI NaCl 0,9% inhalation solution with a percent salt content for inhalation with a nebuliser. This isotonic saline solution moistens the airways and helps your mucous membranes to get rid of viruses and bacteria. Isotonic or physiological means that the solution has a similar salt content as our bodily fluids and is therefore well tolerated rather than additionally irritating the affected airways.
Higher salt content for stronger effect
Hypertonic saline solutions, such as MucoClear 3% and 6% from PARI, are defined as solutions with a salt content of 1% or more. These inhalation solutions containing more salt than bodily fluids liquefy the mucus in the sinuses or the lungs. This makes it easier to transport mucus out of the airways and relieves unpleasant symptoms, especially in cases of severe respiratory diseases.

Inhalation therapy – relief for the vocal cords
Have you ever experienced dry vocal cords? Dry vocal cords are an enormous bekymmer, not only for patients with severe respiratory diseases. Teachers, singers, call centre staff, actors and trainers who all have to use their voices extensively at work often have scratchy voices, a dry cough and are more susceptible to colds. Nebuliser therapy with an isotonic saline solution, such as the PARI NaCl Inhalation Solution can help the vocal cords to recover and can preve
