Niklas Eriksson Introduction

The gun ship Riksäpplet was one of the first to be built by the newly recruited English Master Shipwrights in Sweden. It was launched in and taken into service in On 5 June , the ship came adrift from its moorings in Dalarö in the Stockholm archipelago. The hull struck a rock and sank in water that was m deep. The majority of the guns and the rig were salvaged in the following years. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dynamite was used to blast the hull in order to recover black oak for producing furniture. As a result, the site is now regarded as totally ruined.

As part of the interdisciplinary project Ships at War: early modern maritime battlefields in the Baltic Sea, at Södertörn University in Sweden, it has been possible to take a closer look at the wreck. The work has consisted of a minor field survey as well as compiling an inventory of
